OVER THE years Indians have evolved as travellers due to increased disposable income, awareness and digital connectivity. International travel is no more just for the niche class but has become a way of expression and discovery for people across ages and income groups. The connectivity and airport facilities have now reached even into the remote places of India which helps in promoting tourism in tier I and tier II cities as well. Several initiatives have contributed to this success, such as the launch of the Electronic visa, direct flight connectivity from various cities in India and opening of the new passenger terminal at Muscat International Airport, among others.
In an exclusive interview with Lubaina Sheerazi, India Representative, Ministry of Tourism, Oman BW Hotelier got some insights on how there has been an increase in the number of Indian tourist inflow in the country.
Sheerazi pointed out that The Sultanate of Oman has recorded a 12.37 percent growth in Indian tourist arrivals with 357,147 travellers visiting the country from January to December 2018. It has been noted that India is the second highest source market for Oman after the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The significant increase in incoming tourism is the result of the economic diversification strategy adopted by the government of Oman. In order to attract more travellers to visit the country, Oman announced a new short-term tourist visa at five Omani Riyal (OMR) equivalent to approximately INR 900, for a 10-day visit according to this strategy any Indian who hold a valid visa to any one of these countries – United States of America, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan and the Schengen States can avail for Oman visa as well.
Sheerazi also commented about the MICE movement of India, “The Ministry of Tourism is fully committed to enhancing the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) in order to help Oman achieve its potential to be a first-class destination for the business tourism segment. Oman has seen a significant increase in this sector with the launch of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) in Muscat, which supports international and local organizations in hosting large events. The OCEC includes ultra-modern theatres, conference rooms and will eventually have four hotels with almost 1000 rooms along with major exhibition halls that can cater to tens of thousands of people at one time,” she says.
Other than promoting MICE, Oman also spreads its arms in other fields. It promotes Muscat which is the capital and entry and exists point, not just this the majestic mountains of Oman – Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams are considered to be the favourite spots for the visitors. It is also considered to be a preferred wedding destination for many. The city has well-endowed modern infrastructure which provides the perfect set up for the wedding.
Sheerazi also talked about the Oman tourism Strategy, “Developed by the Ministry of Tourism (MOT), we foresee at least 11.7 million international and domestic tourists by 2040, triggered by domestic and international investments into the sector of around OMR 20 billion over the period. As part of its 2040 strategy, the Ministry of Tourism is undertaking major steps to develop and promote a series of destinations across Oman, offering the visitors more avenues and experience,” she spilt the beans.
