In what the Fortune Hotels’ Managing Director Samir MC considers a significant milestone in their ‘beyond borders’ expansion strategy, the brand launched its first international hotel in Bhaktapur, Nepal. “This is what we have envisioned for our presence in South Asia and proximal markets,” he says.
Fortune Resort & Wellness Spa Bhaktapur, an upscale resort is spread across five-plus acres and is strategically located adjacent to the Kailash Mahadev Shiva statue, the second tallest statue of Lord Shiva in the world at 144 ft. The property is situated on a picturesque hill and features 66 spacious rooms, cosy cottages and elegant suites adorned with contemporary decor. “We will be evaluating some more additional rooms for future expansion,” adds Samir.
He shares that for culinary aficionados, the resort presents Rainbow, an all-vegetarian culinary delight serving a diverse range of multi-cuisine delicacies and nourishing superfoods and Neptune, a trendy bar and lounge, that beckons guests to unwind with an array of spirits, wines and beers. “The resort boasts several expansive banquet venues suitable for hosting weddings, social events, conferences and special gatherings,” informs the Fortune Hotels’ MD.
In addition to its hospitality offerings, the resort prioritises wellness with its plush spa. It is here that guests can indulge in rejuvenating treatments in tranquil surroundings, including couple therapy sessions. Facilities such as jacuzzi, sauna, steam rooms, a state-of-the-art gym and an outdoor swimming pool offering panoramic views of the lush landscape and mountains enhance the guest experience further. Being in close vicinity to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the former royal palace complex of the Mallya kings and a UNESCO world heritage site, it offers guests the opportunity to explore this magnificent landmark a few minutes away from the resort.

What market research or analysis guided the brand to select the location for its inaugural international property and how does it align with the brand’s strategic vision?
The choice of location for the Fortune Resort and Wellness Spa Bhaktapur aligns closely with Fortune Hotels’ strategic vision to expand its presence in key global markets starting with proximal markets that exhibit similar market dynamics, cultural fabric and ecosystem. Nepal thus was most suited as an international location to set foot in both from the perspective of the goodwill and relations the two nations enjoy and also because of the humongous leisure potential and appeal that Nepal has for the global traveler. Bhaktapur is an untapped destination that offers a strategic advantage in terms of access to high-value customer segments, proximity to major tourist attractions and business centers, and potential for long-term growth and sustainability.
What are the key challenges and opportunities that Fortune Hotels anticipate as it enters a new market?
Entering Nepal posed no significant challenges, though there was a learning curve associated with navigating a new country. Understanding the operational landscape was crucial, but fortunately, we found many similarities in business practices between India and Nepal, a primary advantage that comes with entering proximal markets. This familiarity made the transition relatively smooth.
While India has made significant strides in technology and digital innovation, we're exploring how to leverage similar advancements in Nepal. On the hospitality front, our culinary acumen and an understanding of the modern-day global traveller are sure to add value and help enhance our operations and offerings in the Nepalese market.
More so, India remains the largest trading partner for Nepal and also Indians form a considerable segment visiting Nepal each year, with us entering the market, we are sure a majority of our loyal Indian guests would be looking Nepal-wards.
How does Fortune Hotels plan to maintain its brand identity and standards while adapting to the preferences and expectations of international travellers?
Our resort aligns closely with the renowned characteristics of the Fortune brand. We prioritise functional efficiency while maintaining high-quality products and a robust service culture to ensure exceptional value for our guests. What sets this resort apart is our emphasis on wellness. We’re introducing a state-of-the-art spa and wellness centre spanning 5,000 sq ft, enhancing our offerings to promote holistic well-being.
How does Fortune Hotels plan to differentiate itself from competitors in the international market, and what unique value propositions does it offer to travellers seeking memorable experiences?
While most branded hotels in Nepal are concentrated in and around Kathmandu, our resort sets itself apart by being conveniently located in Bhaktapur, just 20 km from the prime city of Kathmandu and 18 km from Tribhuvan International Airport.
Positioned as a holistic wellness retreat, the spa and wellness experiences at the resort distinctly enhance the property's appeal. The Spa is home to multiple relaxing treatment rooms, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms. A well-equipped gymnasium and a mesmerising outdoor swimming pool that offers panoramic views of the lush landscape and mountains beyond, add to the charm. Based on naturopathy and Panchakarma, a team of expert spa therapists, offer signature massages and treatments to rejuvenate the body, mind and soul; including the special Thai massages.
Fortune Resort & Wellness Spa, Bhaktapur is a stylish, upscale resort that showcases our exceptional product offerings and varied state-of-the-art facilities. Our commitment to exemplary service further distinguishes us, and our culinary expertise adds the perfect finishing touch. With time, we are confident that our resort will become a well-known destination in the market as guests experience the unparalleled hospitality we offer.
What are Fortune Hotels’ long-term goals and aspirations for its international expansion and how does it aim to contribute positively to the global hospitality landscape?
As a part of our ‘beyond borders’ expansion strategy, we are eager to spread our wings in markets that are in close proximity to India. Nepal remains our special focus. As we plan our expansion in the Kingdom of Nepal, we are currently in discussions with a few potential owners and hope to confirm our new operating alliances soon, owing to the strong value proposition we bring forth for our key stakeholders – the asset owners, our colleagues and our guests-be it our experience in operating hotels, robust sales, marketing and distribution ecosystem or our deep-rooted knowledge of handling multi-ferrous markets.
