A year of transformative initiatives for Goa Tourism

With its focus on regenerative tourism, cultural preservation, and sustainable practices, Goa is setting benchmarks and redefining the future of travel

The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, commenced 2024 with an ambitious vision and remarkable achievements that have positioned the state as a pioneer in the global tourism landscape. The journey began with the Meet the Media event, a platform used to launch Goa’s revolutionary Regenerative Tourism Initiative, making Goa the first state in India to adopt such a sustainable model. This approach emphasises restoring ecosystems, empowering communities, and ensuring sustainable economic growth, setting a benchmark for tourism development across the nation.

January saw the Department host two events that showcased Goa’s deep-rooted cultural and historical legacy. On January 19, a grand celebration commemorating the 350th coronation anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was organised at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maidan in Bicholim. This spectacular tribute included cultural programmes by Mumbai artists, the recitation of “Shiva Gomant Gatha,” and the unveiling of a grand statue of the legendary warrior king. The event was a powerful reminder of Shivaji Maharaj’s enduring influence and contributions to Indian society.

On January 22, the department hosted “Enlightening Sri Ram Jyoti,” an event steeped in spirituality and tradition. Featuring a Maha Aarti, Bhajan Sandhya, Dindi performances, classical dances, and a grand display of fireworks, the event united locals and tourists in a shared celebration of devotion and cultural pride.

The launch of the Beach Vigil App marked a significant leap in enhancing beach management and safety. The app empowers citizens and tourists to report issues such as littering, unauthorised hawkers, illegal structures, and other disturbances, ensuring Goa’s beaches remain pristine and safe. This initiative demonstrates the department’s commitment to sustainable tourism and community participation.

Goa Tourism garnered international acclaim at prestigious events such as ITB Berlin 2024, where it was recognised as the “Destination of the Year,” and Tourism Minister Rohan A Khaunte was honoured as the “Tourism Minister of the Year.” The state’s pavilion highlighted its regenerative tourism initiatives, hinterland tourism, eco-tourism, and vibrant cultural festivals, captivating a global audience.

At OTM Mumbai 2024, Goa won the Best Pavilion Award, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in tourism innovation. Additionally, the state was awarded the Excellence in Tourism Promotion accolade at TTF Ahmedabad and TTF Kolkata, where Goa’s pavilion also secured awards for Best Decoration and Design, reflecting the state’s dedication to creating engaging and visually captivating experiences.

These platforms provided opportunities to promote responsible practices, forge international collaborations, and showcase Goa as India’s leading regenerative tourism destination. Goa also received an International Award at Tashkent International Tourism Fair held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for its innovative and sustainable tourism practices. This global recognition reinforces Goa’s commitment to excellence on an international stage.

The Department also launched the Airbnb Training Programme, which empowers local hosts to enhance the quality and appeal of their properties, promoting homestays and bed-and-breakfast accommodations under the Homestay and Bed-and-Breakfast Policy. This initiative aims to boost community-based tourism, women’s entrepreneurship and provide travellers with the most authentic Goan experiences.

Additionally, the much-anticipated Let’s Goa App was introduced, offering tourists a seamless platform for planning their trips, booking experiences, and accessing information about Goa’s attractions and services.

The department organised various festivals that celebrated Goa’s rich culture and heritage. Events such as the Spirit of Goa Festival, Goa Heritage Festival, Chikal Kalo, Tripurari Poornima, Shigmo, Carnival and the World Tourism Day 2024 celebrations attracted both locals and tourists. The World Tourism Day festivities stood out with a schedule of events for the entire week, making it World Tourism Week for the Department of Tourism. Heritage walks, market tours, cooking competitions, and youth engagement programmes, and more were organised, all underlining the department’s focus on community-based and regenerative tourism. Additionally, Goa’s largest tourism stakeholder meet brought together over 1,000 stakeholders to revel in the joyous celebration of World Tourism Day.
