Technology Plays Important Role In Reducing Water Use In Hotels

REDUCING THE wastage of water in hotels is one of the topmost priorities of hoteliers.

With water resources becoming scarce day by day, hotels are deploying new technologies to preserve their water supplies.

Executives of leading hotels participating in the Responsible Hoteliering Conclave 2016 on Monday discussed new ideas to save water.

Rothin Banerjee, director of engineering at the Taj palace, said, "We have invested more than Rs 1 crore in setting our STP. In Taj Palace, usage of water is almost 100 litre less than international guidelines."

John Samuel, director of engineering at the ITC Grand Bharat, said the group did a hydrological study to find water resources in the nearby area. This way the company can have access to water not only for itself but also help people in the area.

"Nowadays Spacious & Four Fixture Bathroom with a free standing Bathtub is a part of the design for all Resorts and even for new/renovated Luxury Business Hotels. The solution for this is to go with Water Efficient Fixtures and technologies. One such technology is to use Pressure Conserving Aerators, which optimizes eater flow without compromising the Performance/ Luxury Factor. We have achieved 30 percent saving, while selecting the right aerators for the fixtures," Samuel said

Kanwal Walia, complex director (engineering), Westin Gurgaon and Sohna, said, "Nobody can control wastage unless they start measuring the water usage. Monitoring is the most import aspect of water control and for that we have installed many meters around our property."

The panellists agreed on recycling water to minimise water intake from natural resources.

"With proper technology, recycled water is as clean as the bottled water," Walia said.

"More water is going to be consumed because of the new requirement of luxury. Efficient fixtures play important role in saving water," Samuel added.
