SriLankan Airlines celebrates 45 years of operations

SriLankan Airlines marks its 45th anniversary on September 1, having commenced operations on September 1, 1979, with a fleet of two Boeing 707 aircraft. As a trailblazer in the aviation sector, the airline has demonstrated resilience and adaptability throughout its history, remaining a prominent player in the South Asian market.

Since its inception, SriLankan Airlines has achieved significant milestones, including the expansion of its route network and fleet modernisation. The airline has introduced various services and programs, among them the renowned “Serendib Club” frequent flyer program, and has received numerous accolades for its service quality and operational efficiency.

“Forty-five years is a long time in any industry, but achieving this milestone in the commercial airline sector is an even greater feat. SriLankan Airlines is one of the oldest commercial airlines in this region, and we are incredibly proud of our journey over the past 45 years, despite the regular challenges we have faced. Through it all, SriLankan has remained steadfast in its commitment to our loyal customers and in supporting Sri Lanka through every high and low,” reflected Ashok Pathirage, Chairman of SriLankan Airlines.

SriLankan Airlines currently connects 114 destinations across 62 countries, operating an all-Airbus fleet that includes A330s and A320s.
