Indian travellers leads APAC in travel plans for 2025 says Skyscanner

As per the report from Skyscanner, in India, 58 per cent of travellers plan to allocate a higher budget for flights, while 45 per cent will spend more on accommodations

Indian travellers are poised to dominate the Asia-Pacific (APAC) travel landscape in 2025, with three out of five planning to increase their travel activities next year, according to Skyscanner's latest "Horizons" report. Based on a survey of 19,000 consumers across 16 global markets, including 6,000 from APAC, the report highlights shifting travel trends, priorities, and emerging preferences shaping the industry. India leads APAC in travel enthusiasm, with 66 per cent of respondents intending to travel more in 2025. Travellers across the region are prioritising travel, with 80 per cent planning to take as many or more trips than in 2024. Spending on flights and accommodations is also set to increase.

Commenting on the report, Hugh Aitkens, VP, Strategic Relations and Development at Skyscanner, said, “Many airlines are adopting new technologies, and at pace, to better serve travellers and respond to market demand. This includes AI-driven revenue management decisions and more personalised and dynamic offers. At the same time, airlines are grappling with global macro-economic pressures and geo-political issues which are putting strain on routes and profitability.

However, our data shows that travel demand remains resilient, and travellers are adapting their itineraries as they seek out collective experiences. This blend of resilience, ingenuity and innovation from both travellers and airlines looks set to make next year a transformative one for all. Looking ahead, we expect the market to become more active with seat sales and promotions as airlines compete for share of wallet."

As per the report from Skyscanner, in India, 58 per cent of travellers plan to allocate a higher budget for flights, while 45 per cent will spend more on accommodations. Interestingly, 34 per cent are willing to increase car hire expenses, highlighting a growing preference for on-ground travel flexibility. Indian travellers are also keen on premium experiences, with 42 per cent opting for airport lounge access and 57 per cent prepared to pay extra for better in-flight meals, the highest globally. Accommodation upgrades, including larger rooms and higher star ratings, are also popular, reflecting a preference for luxury and comfort.

Emerging travel preferences
Food continues to influence destination choices, with 54 per cent of Indian travellers citing it as a key factor alongside costs for hotels (65 per cent) and flights (62 per cent). The desire for unique and collective experiences is shaping travel behaviour, from cultural immersions to gaming pilgrimages.

The report identifies emerging trends such as off-the-beaten-path destinations. Shillong, India, and Dayong, China, have seen an 800 per cent increase in search volume due to their unique landscapes and cultural offerings. Shorter trip durations, averaging six days, also reflect a shift in travel planning.

Technological impact and Sustainable tourism
Confidence in AI-powered travel tools is growing, with 84 per cent of Indian travellers using AI for destination research, flight booking, and itinerary planning. Across APAC, AI applications in travel are popular for comparing prices, finding inspiration, and crafting tailored itineraries.

Sustainability is also gaining traction. Over a quarter of APAC travellers are exploring less-touristy areas to avoid over tourism. However, safety remains a significant concern, with 60 per cent of Indian respondents prioritising secure destinations.

Social media continues to be a major influence on travel planning, with 68 per cent of Indian travellers relying on platforms for destination ideas. Films, television, and online media also play a critical role in shaping choices.

Future ahead
As travel demand rebounds, Indian travellers are expected to drive growth in APAC’s tourism sector. With increased spending, premium experiences, and a focus on sustainability, 2025 promises to be a transformative year for travel, bolstered by technological innovations and evolving traveller preferences.
