According to the Indian Economics Survey tabled in Parliament the country’s tourism industry experienced a remarkable resurgence in 2023, with 92 lakh foreign tourists visiting India. This figure represents a 43.5 per cent increase from the previous year, underscoring a robust recovery from the setbacks caused by the Covid19 pandemic.
The influx of tourists has had a significant economic impact. The tourism sector generated over Rs 2.3 lakh crore in foreign exchange receipts, marking a substantial rise in India’s share of global tourism earnings. This growth highlights the sector’s crucial role in the country’s economic development and its ability to attract international visitors.
Even the hospitality sector has witnessed substantial growth, with the addition of 14,000 new rooms across various chain-affiliated hotels, bringing the total inventory to 183,000 rooms. This expansion is a testament to the industry’s confidence in sustained tourism growth and its commitment to enhancing the accommodation infrastructure to cater to the increasing number of visitors. To boost revenue, hotels have adopted innovative strategies, such as leasing external brands. This approach has not only diversified their offerings but also attracted a broader range of guests.
Additionally, the Average Daily Rate (ADR) for hotels increased by 13.6 per cent in the FY 2023-24, reflecting the growing demand for quality accommodation and the willingness of tourists to spend more on premium services.
The surge in foreign tourist arrivals and the corresponding economic benefits underscore the effectiveness of India’s tourism policies and marketing campaigns. The Incredible India campaign, which promotes the country’s diverse attractions, has played a pivotal role in drawing tourists from around the world. From cultural heritage sites and spiritual experiences to adventure tourism and natural beauty, India offers a wide array of experiences that appeal to a global audience. Moreover, the Government’s focus on improving infrastructure, easing travel restrictions, and ensuring the safety and security of tourists has been instrumental in this recovery. Enhanced connectivity, both domestic and international, has made it easier for tourists to explore various regions of the country.
