Amy’s Kitchen Plans to Open a Production Unit in India

IN 1987, while Rachel Berliner was pregnant with Amy and on bed rest, Andy went looking for ready-made meals at their local natural grocery store. When he couldn’t find anything organic and vegetarian that satisfied their taste buds, they decided to make their own. That’s when Amy’s Kitchen began right out of their home.

A lot has changed since 1987. Amy has grown up. She and her husband, Jace, play active roles in the company that shares Amy’s name. Amy’s Kitchen has grown beyond the Berliner’s wildest dreams, going from several family members pitching in anywhere they can, to a wonderful group of employees, farmers and suppliers.

Rachel Berliner, Co-founder along with Paul Schiefer, Senior Director, Business Development, were in India at World Food India 2017 where they spoke about their expansion plans. “The organic food industry is a $50 billion industry in the US. In India, the momentum has just started and is seen as a potential to growth in the organic farming sector. Some people and brands are making the right noise to be health-conscious. We see a lot of growth opportunity in India market especially in this sector and that’s why this is the right time to tap the market,” says Schiefer.

A pioneer in the global organic food movement, Amy’s has continually worked towards the organic food movement since its inception and now plan to launch a special India range of frozen ready-to-eat food, snacks, and pizzas. “We have plans to produce food units and open a production unit in India in the near future. When we started selling products in late 2016 in Delhi/NCR, the focus was on quality organic food. As we expand our retailing in Mumbai stores by early 2018, followed by other cities, we are thinking to expand it at the manufacturing level and to be able to procure homegrown organic seeds and ingredients from cities like Dehradun, Indore, Kerala and more,” confirms Schiefer.

Amy’s Kitchen is showcasing a special range of frozen ready-to-eat food in World Food India, Delhi from 3rd to 5th November, 2017.

An international range of over 300 products, Amy’s Kitchen includes gluten free and vegan options -- canned soups, frozen pizzas, meals and snacks at a range of INR 160/-. It is currently available across retail outlets like Modern Bazaar, Le Marche, Foodhall, 24SEVEN, Needs Supermarket, and HyperCITY.
