Indian travellers are on the move this wedding season, with around 35 lakh weddings expected across India between November 23 and December 15, 2024

As the wedding and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) season gains momentum in India, the country witnesses a surge in travel bookings. November and December 2024 have showcased significant growth in both domestic and international travel, highlighting specific destinations experiencing extraordinary popularity. As per the Airfares & Booking Data report by IXIGO, with an estimated 35 lakh weddings taking place across India between November 23, 2024, and December 15, 2024, the travel industry is witnessing a surge in activity. Among these, Varanasi has emerged as the star performer with an impressive 265 per cent year-over-year (YoY) growth in flight bookings. From domestic travel to international honeymoons, the season has redefined travel trends, supported by falling airfares and evolving preferences.

Domestic Highlights
While popular hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Goa maintain their stronghold, it is the previously unexplored destinations that experienced major growth, marking a significant shift in travel trends this year. Varanasi’s 265 per cent surge reflects a combination of its cultural and spiritual appeal during wedding seasons and growing interest in eco-tourism and heritage events. Known for its ghats, temples, and traditional aura, Varanasi attracts not just wedding travellers but also MICE participants who seek a blend of work and culture.

Other notable domestic destinations include Gorakhpur, often overlooked in the past, which has seen a 109 per cent rise in bookings, signalling its emergence as a gateway to Uttar Pradesh’s cultural and historical treasures. Its improved connectivity has made it an attractive option for family events and regional conferences.

Srinagar continues to enchant travellers, recording a 97 per cent increase in travel during this season. Its breathtaking landscapes and premium hospitality make it an idyllic destination for weddings and corporate retreats. Meanwhile, Pune, with its vibrant mix of modernity and serenity, has registered an 89 per cent growth, appealing equally to professionals for MICE events and celebrants seeking unique venues.

In the Northeast, Guwahati is becoming a significant player with an 80 per cent surge in travel. As the gateway to the region, its picturesque surroundings and cultural richness offer an exceptional backdrop for both personal celebrations and corporate gatherings. Patna and Ranchi, traditionally less associated with grand events, have also seen a remarkable 70 per cent rise in bookings each. Their growing hospitality infrastructure and strategic locations are drawing attention for regional weddings and business meetups.

International Highlights
In the international segment, Phuket has taken the lead with a whopping 270 per cent YoY growth. Known for its beaches, luxury resorts, and vibrant nightlife, Phuket remains a top choice for destination weddings and incentive travel programmes.

Kuala Lumpur follows closely with a 244 per cent increase in bookings. The capital city of Malaysia offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition, with iconic landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Towers, bustling markets, and diverse culinary experiences. Hanoi, with a 93 per cent increase, is another destination on the rise. The capital city of Vietnam is known for its rich history, bustling street markets, and delicious street food, making it a captivating destination for travellers seeking an authentic Southeast Asian experience.

Kuwait, with a 205 per cent increase, is another destination experiencing a significant rise in popularity. Known for its modern architecture, luxurious shopping malls, and rich cultural heritage, Kuwait offers a unique Middle Eastern experience that appeals to both leisure and business travellers.

Muscat, with a 124 per cent increase, is another Middle Eastern gem gaining popularity. The capital city of Oman offers a serene and authentic Arabian experience, with its stunning coastline, historic forts, and vibrant souks. Colombo, with a 46 per cent increase, is another destination gaining popularity. The capital city of Sri Lanka offers a mix of colonial architecture, vibrant markets, and beautiful beaches, making it an attractive destination for travellers seeking a blend of culture and relaxation.

Bali, with a 148 per cent increase, remains a favourite among travellers seeking a tropical paradise. Known for its lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture, Bali offers a diverse range of experiences, from surfing and diving to exploring ancient temples and enjoying traditional Balinese cuisine.

Abu Dhabi, with a 165 per cent increase, continues to attract visitors with its blend of luxury, culture, and adventure. Dubai, with a 62 per cent increase, remains a top destination for its luxury shopping, modern architecture, and world-class attractions such as the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall.

Bangkok, with a 112 per cent increase, continues to be a popular destination for its vibrant nightlife, bustling markets, and rich cultural heritage. The capital city of Thailand offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition, with its towering skyscrapers, historic temples, and lively street markets. The city’s strategic location and excellent connectivity also make it a convenient hub for travellers exploring the Middle East and beyond.

Singapore, with a 63 per cent increase, continues to attract visitors with its clean and green environment, modern infrastructure, and diverse cultural experiences. As travel continues to rebound, these destinations are likely to see continued growth in popularity, offering travellers a wealth of opportunities to explore and discover new places.

Airfare Trends
The data highlights significant changes in airfares, with most routes experiencing a decrease in prices, making travel more affordable for passengers. A few routes have experienced an increase in airfares. For instance, the fare from New Delhi to Hyderabad has increased by 10 per cent, from Rs 5542 to Rs 6111. Similarly, the fare from New Delhi to Jammu has increased by 11 per cent, and the fare from New Delhi to Udaipur has increased by 15 per cent. These increases could be due to higher demand, limited flight availability, or seasonal factors affecting these routes.

One of the most significant decreases is observed on the Bengaluru to Kolkata route, where the average fare has dropped by 35 per cent, from Rs 7382 to Rs 4778. This substantial reduction makes it an attractive option for travellers looking to explore the cultural and historical richness of Kolkata. Similarly, the Chennai to Kolkata route has seen a 34 per cent decrease, making it more accessible for travellers from the southern part of India.

Other notable decreases include the Ahmedabad to New Delhi route, with a 35 per cent reduction, and the New Delhi to Patna route, which has seen a 27 per cent decrease. These reductions are likely to encourage more travel between these cities, boosting tourism and business activities. The fare from New Delhi to Gorakhpur has also decreased significantly by 33 per cent, making it more affordable for travellers visiting this city known for its historical and religious significance. These reductions, coupled with increasing demand, have made travel both budget-friendly and accessible.

Flight bookings to major metro hubs and top leisure destinations like Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar, Jaipur, and Goa seeing a strong 70-80 per cent YoY increase. Tier-II cities are powering the wedding season this year. Travel to tier 2 and 3 cities in Nov & Dec have seen a significant rise, with Varanasi bookings up by an impressive 265 per cent and Gorakhpur by 109 per cent. Amritsar, Chandigarh and Patna have also recorded an increase of over 70 per cent in flight bookings.”
