Travel 2025: A year of relaxation, adventure, and smarter travel decisions

As 2025 approaches, Agoda’s newly released Travel Trends survey paints a picture of how travellers plan to explore the world in the coming year

As 2025 approaches, Agoda’s newly released Travel Trends survey paints a picture of how travellers plan to explore the world in the coming year. From prioritising family adventures to leveraging technology for seamless travel experiences, these insights offer a glimpse into the evolving preferences of modern travellers.

Based on responses from over 1,000 participants across 11 Asian markets, the findings showcase trends that are set to shape the travel industry in profound ways.

Family First
One of the highlights from the survey is the increasing emphasis on family travel. For 34 per cent of respondents, spending quality time with loved ones remains a top priority. Indonesia leads this category, with 58 per cent of travellers planning multi-generational trips, followed by India at 30 per cent. The popularity of family travel underscores a shift towards experiences that foster deeper connections, with couples and solo travellers trailing at 23 per cent and 19 per cent, respectively.

Relaxation
The desire to escape the stresses of daily life has emerged as the primary motivator for travel. A population of 75 per cent of respondents cited relaxation as their main reason for planning a trip. This sentiment is even stronger among Indian travellers, 80 per cent of whom seek a break from their routines. Secondary motivations include visiting friends and family (38 per cent) and cultural exploration (35 per cent), reflecting a well-rounded approach to leisure.

Tech and digital tools revolutionise travel
Technology continues to redefine how travellers plan and experience their journeys. A staggering 80 per cent of respondents intend to use travel apps for booking and organising their trips, with Indian travellers leading the pack with 90 per cent relying on these digital tools. Additionally, virtual reality (VR) tours are gaining traction, with 12 per cent expressing interest in previewing destinations virtually before finalising plans. This integration of tech enhances accessibility and convenience for global travellers.

Budget-savvy explorers
In a cost-conscious era, travellers are striking a balance between indulgence and financial prudence. Sixty-five percent plan to spend under $250 (approximately Rs 21,073) per night on accommodations. Indians, in particular, prioritise affordability, with 70 per cent citing budget as a critical factor in trip planning. Despite these budget constraints, travel remains a priority—87 per cent of respondents expect to take as many or more trips in 2025 compared to 2024, with 52 per cent planning international adventures.

Work and wanderlust
As work culture evolves, so do travel patterns. Beyond conventional business trips (28 per cent), the survey highlights the growing trend of digital nomadism. One in 25 respondents plans to work remotely while traveling in 2025, blending professional responsibilities with leisure. This trend is especially pronounced in the Philippines, where one in fourteen travellers identifies as a prospective digital nomad. With flexible work arrangements becoming more common, this hybrid approach to travel is set to grow.

Exploring uncharted paths
The thrill of exploring new destinations resonates with 84 per cent of travellers. Sources of inspiration vary, with 71 per cent drawing ideas from personal interests and hobbies, 56 per cent seeking value deals, and 33 per cent relying on recommendations from friends and family. Social media also plays a significant role, influencing 20 per cent of respondents. Loyalty programs and collaborations between banks, credit card companies, and travel platforms are especially popular in India, making travel more accessible and rewarding.

Theme parks continue to captivate travellers, with one in eight respondents planning trips centered around these attractions. Iconic destinations such as Disneyland in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, Universal Studios in Singapore and Osaka, and Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi are major draws. For Indian travellers, the UAE and Singapore top the list for theme park adventures, reflecting the region's appeal for family-friendly and thrill-seeking experiences.
