Courtesy its diverse heritage, natural wonders and innovative initiatives, Madhya Pradesh is steadily emerging as a premier tourist destination. With emphasis on inclusivity, sustainability and innovation, the state is not just showcasing its past but also building a vibrant future for its people and visitors alike. At the forefront of this transformation is Bidisha Mukherjee, IAS, Additional Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB).
In an exclusive interaction with BW Hotelier, Mukherjee shares her vision for developing sustainable tourism, empowering local communities and placing MP firmly on the global tourism map.
Sustainable and inclusive tourism initiatives
Emphasising on the importance of sustainable tourism as it not only preserves the state’s rich heritage and environment but also empowers local communities, Mukherjee talks about one such initiative – the promotion of safe tourism for women. “We have trained 10,000 women across various fields including hospitality, guiding and driving to ensure solo women travellers and women’s groups feel secure and supported,” she remarks. Women now lead initiatives such as operating homestays and managing cultural cafes, offering visitors a chance to experience authentic rural life.
Rural tourism has also witnessed a surge in popularity. Homestays in places like Ladpura Khas and Chanderi are now sought-after destinations for both, domestic and international travellers. Mukherjee explains, “International tourists enjoy immersing themselves in rural life, whether it’s birdwatching, star-gazing, or trying their hand at local crafts.” These efforts are not only creating unique experiences for travellers but also boosting the income and self-reliance of rural women.
Cultural tourism
Madhya Pradesh is rich in spiritual and cultural heritage, with iconic sites like Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar temples drawing millions of pilgrims. Mukherjee notes the growing importance of spiritual tourism, saying, “We are working on enhancing the visitor experience through initiatives like the Ram Van Gaman Path, a collaborative project with Uttar Pradesh, and modernising amenities around temples to attract more visitors.”

The state’s efforts in promoting cultural tourism have garnered international recognition. UNESCO has recently declared Gwalior and Orchha as Creative Cities of Music, further elevating the state’s profile. Mukherjee adds, “We are aiming to bring Bhopal on the global map as a City of Literature. Cultural exchanges are ongoing, with Indian artistes performing abroad and international artistes showcasing their work here.”
Ecotourism and adventure opportunities
While heritage and cultural tourism are key pillars, the state is also focussing on ecotourism. The state features several wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves. “In the past three years, we’ve added two new tiger reserves and initiatives like white tiger safaris are also gaining traction,” Mukherjee says.
Efforts are underway to develop water-based tourism as well. She reveals plans for a cruise service, connecting Narmada River destinations in collaboration with Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. “We’ve floated an expression of interest, and major players in the cruise industry have shown interest,” Mukherjee says, highlighting how such projects could further diversify the state’s tourism offerings.
Filming-friendly policies
Madhya Pradesh has become a favourite destination for Bollywood filmmakers, with its stunning landscapes and culturally rich locales offering a perfect canvas for storytelling. Mukherjee notes, “Producers and directors choose the state not only because of its scenic locations but because of the hassle-free environment we provide.” She highlights the role of local communities in supporting film crews, citing examples of people providing meals and helping crews navigate the area.
Rani Mahal, Chanderi- Stree movie shooting location
Chanderi, a small town in the state, has particularly stood out as a popular filming location. Hindi movies like Stree, Maharani, Hajamat, Sui Dhaga, Akkad Bakkad and Kalank have brought the city into the limelight. Its historical monuments, quaint streets and scenic vistas provide an authentic charm that filmmakers seek. Mukherjee highlights this growing trend, saying, “Chanderi's unique heritage and aesthetic appeal make it an irresistible choice for directors. It’s not just the backdrop but the warm local community that adds to the seamless filmmaking experience here.” With a supportive single-window clearance system and policies tailored to the needs of the film industry, MP continues to attract blockbuster productions, further boosting its reputation as a filming hotspot.
Challenges and opportunities
Despite the successes, there are challenges. Preserving historical monuments and ensuring cleanliness at tourist sites remain critical areas of focus. Mukherjee acknowledges, “Awareness among locals about preserving heritage is still growing, but we are witnessing positive changes. Another challenge is enhancing connectivity to remote tourist destinations. To address this issue, the state has introduced regional air connectivity under the PM Vayu Seva scheme. Mukherjee says, “We’ve connected eight destinations, including Rewa, which was previously inaccessible despite its amazing sites. Improved connectivity will attract more visitors and highlight unexplored locations.”
Future of endless possibilities
When asked about her personal recommendations, Mukherjee shares, “If you’re a Nature enthusiast, places like Tamia and Amarkantak are perfect. For heritage lovers, Mandu and Chanderi offer unparalleled experiences. And those seeking spiritual solace, Maheshwar and Omkareshwar are ideal.”
She concludes by saying, “Madhya Pradesh has something for everyone. From cultural and spiritual tourism to adventure and wildlife experiences, the state is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. We are committed to making it a destination of choice for travellers worldwide.”
