LPU Encouraging Practical Learning Through Uni Hotel

TO PUT emphasis on practical learning, Lovely Professional University (LPU) has come up with a unique concept of Uni Hotel. The hotel is first of its kind in India which is entirely run by the hotel management students. Close to 120 students manage this three-star property, which starts from the front desk to the kitchen and to maintenance of the hotel. All the students from the hotel management stream at LPU, from 1st to 3rd year, participate in managing the hotel and this practical experience is provided to them in the form of an elective, project or an internship.

The 25 room hotel, also includes luxury suites and the tariff ranges between INR 2000 to INR 10000. The hotel also features a fully functional restaurant and a gym.

“Run by the students of the school of hotel management, it is a business run within the campus. The students are aided by the faculty. The hotel hosts university guests, industry recruiters, guest speakers, parents, celebrities and whoever visits LPU and wishes for accommodation within the campus,” said Pratham Mittal, Head of New Initiatives, LPU, during an interaction with BW Hotelier.

Working students are also given compensation as per the market rates. “Working at Unit Hotel gives students solid real-time exposure to the industry and the expectations that come with it. They learn to be skilful and professional resulting in better education outcomes and better placements,” Mittal adds. According to him, students have received salary packages starting INR 20.5 LPA and with global hospitality brands like Ritz Carlton, Oberoi, Hyatt USA, and Marriot Cypress USA.

The Annual Recurring Revenue of the Uni hotel is INR 4 Cr. The university claims that the Uni hotel project helps in better pedagogy and the hotel acts as a good case study for the rest of the departments.
