The Louisiana Office of Tourism, along with key partners, successfully concluded its first promotional mission to India from September 23-27, 2024, in Mumbai and New Delhi. Led by Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Assistant Secretary of Tourism Doug Bourgeois, the mission aimed to increase awareness about Louisiana's diverse tourism offerings among Indian travellers and media.
Key partners, including Visit Lake Charles, New Orleans & Company, and Mississippi River Country, joined the delegation to promote the state's cultural experiences, cuisine, music, festivals, and outdoor adventures. This initiative is part of Louisiana's effort to tap into India's growing travel market, which has seen a 35 per cent increase in visitors to the U.S. from January to July 2024, making India the second-largest overseas market for the U.S. With support from the U.S. Department of Commerce grant under the Market Development Cooperator Programme, Louisiana is expanding its presence in India through collaborations with U.S. Commercial Services and the U.S. Embassy.
“We’re very excited to have continued our work in India,” said Doug Bourgeois, Assistant Secretary of Tourism, Louisiana Office of Tourism. “The Indian traveller is looking for the kind of authentic experiences, amazing music and delicious food that Louisiana is known for. We can’t wait to welcome even more visitors from India to our great state.
Louisiana's strategic location in the Southeastern U.S., easily accessible from major cities like New York, Chicago, and Houston, makes it an attractive addition to any American holiday itinerary. The Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans offers convenient connections to key Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore.
In 2024, Louisiana is celebrating the "Year of Music," spotlighting its rich musical heritage as the birthplace of jazz, Cajun, and Zydeco music. The campaign aims to draw international visitors by highlighting the state’s vibrant and unique musical culture.
