Hotel Association of India launches Odisha Chapter

The association has called for better utility rates, lower property taxes, and other financial incentives for hotels. By reducing operational costs, these measures could make hotels more competitive and attractive for investors

The Hotel Association of India (HAI), has announced the launch of its Odisha Chapter, with Dr JK Mohanty, Managing Director of Swosti Premium Limited and HAI Honorary Secretary. This initiative comes as part of HAI's ongoing efforts to secure greater recognition for the tourism and hospitality sector, emphasising its potential to generate employment, drive economic growth, and promote inclusive development.

The Odisha Chapter is set to address key policy issues at both state and central levels, particularly advocating for equal treatment for the hospitality sector in comparison to manufacturing and agriculture. The association has called for better utility rates, lower property taxes, and other financial incentives for hotels. By reducing operational costs, these measures could make hotels more competitive and attractive for investors. As tourism development occurs predominantly at the state level, HAI has launched state chapters to promote regional growth. The Chapter will focus on securing industry benefits and mapping available schemes that incentivise hotel investments. It will also identify local challenges and highlight best practices within the sector.

Speaking at the launch event, K.B. Kachru, President HAI & Chairman – South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group, emphasised, “We are happy to introduce the Odisha Chapter, which marks a significant milestone for the Association and the hospitality sector. This chapter will help us promote the state’s tourism with the support of HAI hotel members. Odisha has a rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and historical monuments and needs to be promoted.”

The Union Budget for 2024-2025 has prioritised Odisha as a key state for tourism development. This makes the launch of HAI’s first state chapter in Odisha a significant step toward boosting the local hospitality industry. The chapter plans to collaborate closely with the state tourism department and other local stakeholders to promote sustainable tourism and hospitality practices.

HAI members are also planning to expand their footprint in Odisha, recognizing the state’s immense potential for tourism growth through improved connectivity and enhanced infrastructure. The association remains committed to sustainable development and aligns with the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Global Hotel Sustainability Basics initiative. Through the Odisha Chapter, HAI aims to foster growth in both domestic and international tourism, solidifying the state's position as a prime travel destination.

Rohit Khosla, Vice President of HAI and Executive Vice President (Operations) at The Indian Hotels Company Limited, stated, "Odisha is rapidly gaining popularity among travelers, drawn by its culture, heritage, and natural beauty. The positive aspect is that 4-5 star hotels are increasingly interested in the state and are ready to expand. We are optimistic that the HAI Odisha chapter will assist in the state's growth and foster collaboration with stakeholders. HAI is committed to the betterment of the industry and will continue to work towards job creation and economic contribution."
