According to the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024 report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF), India has improved its ranking to 39th among 119 countries. In the previous index published in 2021, India was ranked 54th, but a revision in WEF's methodology has adjusted India's 2021 rank to 39th place. The TTDI report highlights that India's scores have improved in three key areas: Prioritization of Travel & Tourism, Safety & Security, and Health & Hygiene.
As per the UNWTO barometer for May 2024, there were 975 million international tourist arrivals worldwide in 2022, with India recording 14.3 million international tourist arrivals, representing 1.47 per cent of the international inbound tourism market share. India's share of international tourist arrivals in the Asia & Pacific region was 15.66 per cent in 2022.
The Ministry of Tourism is promoting India's tourism destinations and products both domestically and internationally. This is achieved through an integrated marketing and promotional strategy, in collaboration with the travel trade, state governments, and Indian missions abroad.
Under the "Champion Service Sector Scheme (CSSS)," the Ministry of Tourism has been reimbursing the Ministry of Civil Aviation for expenses incurred under the UDAN (RCS) scheme. To this date, Rs 226 crore has been reimbursed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Under the RCS UDAN Tourism initiative, 53 tourism routes are operational, improving connectivity to important tourist destinations.
