Mahakumbh 2025 goes digital with Google Maps, AI to transform event

Google, UP government introduce tech-driven solutions to guide and secure 45 crore devotees in a first-of-Its-kind initiative

The 2025 Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj is set to make history with large-scale digitalisation, becoming the most technologically advanced version of the iconic religious festival. For the first time, Google Maps will provide dedicated navigation services, ensuring a seamless experience for the estimated 45 crore devotees attending the event.

According to the information from Uttar Pradesh government, this innovative approach is part of an MoU signed between Google and the Mahakumbh Mela Authority, integrating the sprawling Mahakumbh area into Google Maps.

The system will guide visitors to key locations, including ghats, temples, akhadas, and saints’ camps. Google Navigation will deliver real-time, detailed information about routes and roads, enabling devotees to easily reach iconic spots like the Sangam and other cultural and spiritual sites.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who has prioritised the integration of cutting-edge digital technologies in governance, emphasised the significance of this initiative. “Digital Mahakumbh represents a giant leap in leveraging technology to enhance safety, convenience, and accessibility for millions. It underscores Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to modernising traditional events while preserving their essence,” he said.

AI-Driven Security and Lost-and-Found Services
Security at the Mahakumbh will also benefit from advanced technologies. A network of 328 AI-enabled cameras with facial recognition capabilities will ensure 24-hour surveillance. These cameras will instantly identify missing persons, enhancing the efficiency of search and rescue operations. A Digital Lost and Found Centre, launching on 1 December, will register missing persons digitally and share information across platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

“This innovative use of AI will provide real-time assistance and strengthen law enforcement's ability to maintain order during the Mela,” a senior official from the Mahakumbh Mela Authority remarked.

Mobile Apps, Smart Signage, and Water Management
In addition to navigation and security, other tech-enabled solutions will streamline operations at the Mahakumbh. Multilingual digital signage will guide visitors across the Mela grounds, while a dedicated mobile app and web portal will provide reporting and alert systems. These platforms will offer role-based dashboards for secure monitoring and allow authorities to manage water levels and address potential flooding via GPS-based tracking and geo-tagging.

Digital processes have also been introduced to ensure dispute-free land allotment and solid waste management, enhancing the event’s environmental sustainability.

Promoting Tradition Through Technology
A digital exhibition will showcase the historical significance of the Mahakumbh, including the display of an Amrit Kalash. This fusion of tradition and innovation highlights how digital tools can preserve and promote India’s rich cultural heritage.

The Digital Mahakumbh initiative is expected to set a benchmark for other large-scale religious and cultural events worldwide. As technology and spirituality converge, the Prayagraj Mahakumbh is poised to become a symbol of modern India’s ability to innovate while honouring its traditions.
